Help stop McDonald’s cruelty

Standard

I just don’t understand… why… when there are much better… kinder ways… of dealing with animals, why in the world won’t the big companies do it? I guess they just don’t think, or don’t care. I hope it’s just that they don’t think until someone presents them with the information. The way I look at it is simple. What if it was me? How would I feel? Animals have feelings too. How would we like it if someone bigger and stronger than us just waltzed in, scooped us and our family members up, and treated us the way so many treat these animals, not caring as long as we were dinner…?  If you’ve never thought of it this way… it changes your perspective greatly.

This came from change.org… please consider signing the petition, and passing along to others.

Help Stop McDonald’s Cruelty Now!

To: McDonald’s Restaurant Owners

Sponsored by: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

Almost everyone has eaten at McDonalds at least once, but many people don’t know about the horrific cruelty that goes into every portion of chicken served under the Golden Arches.

In the slaughterhouses of McDonald’s U.S. and Canadian chicken suppliers, birds are dumped out of their transport crates and hung upside-down in metal shackles, which often results in broken bones, extreme bruising, and hemorrhaging. Workers have the opportunity to abuse live birds, and birds have their throats cut while they are still conscious. Many birds are immersed in tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still alive and able to feel pain.

McDonald’s has the ability to end these abuses.

There is a less cruel method of chicken slaughter available to McDonald’s suppliers called controlled-atmosphere killing, or CAK, and it would cost the corporation nothing to demand that its suppliers use it. CAK would eliminate the worst abuses currently suffered by chickens killed for McDonald’s. In fact, a 2005 study about CAK produced by McDonald’s concluded that it is far better for animals than the current method of slaughter.

Write to McDonald’s now, and demand that it phase in the exclusive use of chickens killed by CAK by requiring that its suppliers switch to this method.

my Petition to get carrageenan removed from foods

Standard

At least some to start out with.  It’s heavily used and a long road, but the journey has to start somewhere.  Like the old Chinese proverb, a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.  This is so true.  You can sign the petition here.

Take carrageenan out of ice creams,

soymilk, coffee creamer

Sponsored by: Amy S., Concerned Consumers for Health

Target Companies: Starbuck’s, Purity, Mayfield, Nestle, Morningstar Foods, VitaSoy, Silk, WestSoy

Such a warm family scene.  Kids gathered around the table, laughing… it’s hot outside! Nothing like yummy ice cream to cool things off.  You dip out a cone-full for each of the kids… and what the heck, some for yourself too.  You relish the creamy flavor.

Imagine the shock when you later discover that all these years, among the uber-long list of ingredients… is one that has been linked to stomach lesions, colon cancer, breast cancer and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  It has been lurking in your soy milk… your coffee creamers… your ice cream.  It has been documented that this ingredient has been used to *promote* cancer in lab animals for research.  Would you still want to ingest this ingredient?

The name of it is carrageenan (MSG related, incidentally).  My research and reading into this has shown the above statements are found consistently and continually in relation to this food additive.  It is found in the above products’ ice creams, many soy milks, and coffee creamers.  It’s derived from seaweed and I have been told that since it comes from a “natural ingredient” then it’s OK.  My research shows otherwise.  For one thing, it is not in its natural state.  It is a *derivation*… chemically processed.  For another… you know, I can think of a lot of “natural” stuff that is not good for us, or should not be ingested.  I bet you can too.  I can also think of many “FDA-approved” items that later got pulled off the shelves when it was found people were getting sick or dying from them.

Research for yourself. I have included some links below to get you started.  Then, if you are as angry as I was to find this out… please sign this petition, twitter it, get the word out.  Blog about it.  People need to know, and the companies need to know that we are not going to sit idly by and let them feed us things that they know are dangerous.  Once we are aware, it is up to us to avoid these foods, and look out for those who are still consuming them and just don’t know any better.

To the above stated companies:  Please take carrageenan out of your food products and find healthy, wholesome substitutes.  Many companies like Haagen Dazs, Breyer’s, and even Great Value Naturals (Wal Mart brand) do not use carrageenan in their products. In addition, we feel that soy milk, as a healthy beverage, should not have this additive in its list of ingredients.

We are Concerned Consumers for Health and we take our buying power seriously.  Please take this harmful food additive out of our coffee creamers, soy milks, and ice creams.  Otherwise, we will take our dollars elsewhere.

Hot Dogs Dangerous, Red Meats Can Increase Cancer Risk

Standard

I read the following article on Care2.com this morning.  Many of us already know this but it is worth reminding everyone.

On Wednesday, July 22, the Cancer Project, an affiliate of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nonprofit organization that advocates vegetarianism and alternatives to animal research, filed a class-action consumer fraud lawsuit to require hot dog manufacturers to place warning labels on hot dog packages sold in New Jersey. The labels would read, “Warning: Consuming hot dogs and other processed meats increases the risk of cancer.”

According to PCRM’s press release, the lawsuit was filed on behalf of three New Jersey residents who purchased hot dogs without knowing that processed meats contribute to colorectal cancer.

Studies show that there is conclusive link between meat consumption and colorectal cancer.

The American Cancer Society even warns, “A diet that is high in red meats (beef, lamb, or liver) and processed meats such as hot dogs, bologna, and lunch meat can increase your colorectal cancer risk.”

Ice Cream – ingredient documented to GROW CANCER CELLS

Standard

Folks, is it any wonder we have the health problems we do today?

No matter where you turn,  it seems our food supply is being poisoned in one form or another.  Organic eating is the only fairly safe way and even some of those claims have to be checked out!

Apparently there is yet another DANGEROUS FOOD ADDITIVE, MSG-related, and guess what?  It’s documented to GROW CANCER CELLS.  And this is in OUR FOOD!!!  (Now ask me if I’m surprised… because I’m not.  Unfortunately.)  The name?  Carageenan. Remember that word.

“Carageenan, a widely used MSG related food additive  found in ice cream, dairy products, baked goods, yogurt, and some margarines, is used by researchers when they want to promote cancer growth in their experiments.  Carageenan is documented to actually grow cancer cells, and manufacturers are putting it in our food!”  http://www.vitalearth.org/MSG.html

FDA… what is it you actually do behind those desks all day?  Because it certainly can’t be safeguarding our food!!!!!

MSG – Hidden Dangers of Monosodium Glutamate

Standard

The following article will make you think twice about eating anything with MSG added to it.  This stuff is dangerous and should be banned.  Pay close attention to the list of commonly documented reactions to MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) at the end. I have researched this quite a bit.  It made me so angry, thinking of the way they poison our food, that I wrote the FDA and also the President’s Office this morning. Any of you that would like to do the same, the FDA email is industry@fda.gov for industry and consumer@fda.gov for consumers.  The white house contact form is http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/

If any of these links don’t work, simply copy and paste into your browser or email application.  If enough of us write with our concerns, MAYBE we can make a difference!!!  Check out the links at the bottom.

*****************************************

Why is MSG harmful?

Monosodium glutamate is a drug and a neurotransmitter. Every major human organ is now known to contain glutamate receptors. Overstimulation of these receptors—in the brain or elsewhere—can lead to numerous health problems, many of which may mimic other disorders (such as fibromyalgia or heart arrhythmia), but can go undiagnosed for decades, all the while creating a life of misery and disability for the unfortunate sufferer.

Its ever-expanding use by the food industry causes great concern in the medical profession because MSG overstimulates brain cell activity. It is neither a necessary additive, nor a harmless flavor enhancer like common table salt. MSG actually tricks your brain into thinking the food you are eating tastes good. Manufacturers can therefore use inferior ingredients to make a mediocre product seem tastier. Higher profits and low-quality products of little nutritional value prevail at the expense of consumer health.

MSG intolerance is not an allergic reaction, but a powerful drug reaction. Even in those people who do not suffer acute, immediate reactions to the substance, prolonged or acute exposure will destroy brain cells in anyone.

Common Reactions:

People’s reactions to MSG will vary depending on their sensitivity to the substance. At low doses, some people may experience no obvious physical symptoms, although acute neurochemical activity occurs whenever anyone ingests the substance.

Following is a list of well-documented reactions to monosodium glutamate. Individuals with extreme sensitivities may experience seemingly incurable fibromyalgia-type pain, while others may have immediate, acute reactions, including heart attack.

Remember: a high enough dose is toxic to anyone—which is far more likely as more and more foods contain higher percentages of MSG, sometimes in disguised forms.  Read your food labels carefully! (Click this link to see other names and sources for MSG: http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hiddensources.html)  ** It is also found in aspartame (Nutra Sweet.)

Organic Chocolate by Terra Nostra

Standard

I came across this organic chocolate at a little store in our area, and I was so impressed with (1… the taste!  Dreamy, silky chocolate that melts in your mouth!!  And (2… the company’s life goals —  that  I had to share it with all of you.  The company is Terra Nostra Organic, and their website is http://www.terranostrachocolate.com.  They believe in giving back to the community, using an ideal called  “Equi Trade,” which is a form of social giving, as I have read from their site.

This is truly chocolate with heart.

The following is from their website FAQ’s, and below that, from their profile (both are linked, just click to go there):

What does Terra Nostra mean?

Terra Nostra means “Our Earth” in Latin. We named the company Terra Nostra because it encompasses our overall company belief – to nurture and preserve our earth as best we can.

I love that!

This from their profile:

Terra Nostra chocolates currently outsell all other organic chocolate in the United States. Karlo is a no-nonsense entrepreneur and dedicated chocolatier. He is also an active member of the global chocolate community through a unique form of social giving called Equi-Trade (now called Equal Trade Alliance). Equal Trade was developed and nurtured to help those growers in countries where fairness is sometimes forgotten. With the increased exposure to child labor paired with the birth of Karlo’s children, is what inspired the Equal Trade initiative. The parent company provides funding for Equal Trade. This funding will be through economic growth projects throughout the world. These projects are in areas where Terra Nostra’s raw materials are sourced and in the regions where Terra Nostra’s chocolate creations are consumed and enjoyed.

You can shop their yummy selections here.
